OUR SPEAKER:
 

 

Chris Chambers Goodman, Esq.,
Professor of Law, Pepperdine University School of Law and President of California Women Lawyers


Professor Goodman joined the Pepperdine faculty in 2001 after being an associate at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and Gipson, Hoffman & Pancione, and then teaching at UCLA School of Law.  Currently she teaches Evidence, Trial Practice, and a Seminar on Comparative Anti-Discrimination Law. Professor Goodman also has taught Criminal Law, Trial Preparation and Settlement, Constitutional Law, and Community Outreach: Youth Mentoring. She serves as an advisor to the Black Law Students' Association and the Women's Legal Association, and has been a mock trial team coach. Professor Goodman writes on equal protection topics, including affirmative action, preferences, diversity and racial privacy, as well as evidentiary issues. The second edition of her book, California Evidence, was published in Aspen's Examples and Explanations series. Professor Goodman was an officer of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and served for several years as chair of its Diversity in the Profession Committee. She was also a member of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Board for many years, and now serves as President of California Women Lawyers. As a law student, she served on the board for the Annual Women of Color and the Law Conference.

May MCLE: The Judicial Appointment Process

*Please Note That The May Meeting Will Be Held At The Country Club!*

WLA is honored and excited to have four judges from the San Luis Obispo Superior Court speaking at the May meeting regarding the judicial appointment process.
 

OUR SPEAKERS:

Judge Federman was appointed to the Superior Court in 2012 and currently is assigned to the Family Law Division in Paso Robles.  Prior to becoming a Superior Court Judge, she served as a United States Magistrate Judge and as a Staff Attorney in both the state and federal courts.

Judge Harman was appointed to the bench in 2002 and currently is assigned to the Criminal Division.  She has served two years as Assistant Presiding Judge followed by two years as Presiding Judge.  Prior to her appointment to the bench she was a Deputy District Attorney for over 18 years in San Luis Obispo and Riverside Counties.  She also practiced in the area of corporate and commercial law with the firm of Graham & James. 

Judge Peron has been a bench officer with San Luis Obispo Superior Court since 2006, first as a commissioner handing family law cases, and then as a judge assigned to the Criminal Division.  Previously, she served as the Court’s Family Law Facilitator and operated a private practice in San Luis Obispo. 

Judge Crandall was appointed to the Superior Court in 2003.  He currently is assigned to the Civil Division.  He served as Assistant Presiding Judge and Presiding Judge from 2008-2011.  Prior to his appointment, he clerked in the federal court, served as an Assistant United States Attorney for more than ten years, and litigated public interest and class action cases in private practice with firms in San Diego and San Luis Obispo.

Linda R. Beck, Esq. - After 25+ years of practicing construction law, Linda has redirected her work into elder care and health care advocacy.  Linda started caregiving for her parents with a crisis that disrupted her law practice and her life.  After encountering many people struggling with unexpected caregiving responsibilities, Linda resolved to help others manage elder care with less drama and disruption by teaching caregivers and likely caregivers the essentials of elder- and health care advocacy.  Linda’s experience includes her service as an Ombudsman with the San Luis Obispo County Office of the Long Term Care Ombudsman and as a member of the Leadership Council for the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care. She holds a certificate in Patient Advocacy from UCLA Extension, and earned her J.D. from Hastings College of the Law.  Linda continues to work part-time as a construction lawyer with Best Best & Krieger.

Kathy is the Managing Partner of Andre, Morris & Buttery and has been practicing 25 years, representing many of the Central Coast’s employers.   Specializing in employment law, Kathy’s practice ranges from employment litigation to providing employment counseling, training and workplace investigations.   
 


 

Lisa Boutelle Lazzara is a 1985 graduate of Campbell University School of Law in Buies Creek, North Carolina.  After moving to San Luis Obispo in 1995, Ms. Lazzara worked as an associate at two local law firms as a civil litigator with a focus on employment litigation.  In 2002, she became a sole practitioner, with her practice limited to civil litigation, and employment litigation, in particular.   Ms. Lazzara was the president of the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association in 2005 and currently serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the Stampede Club at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Patrick Saldaña, Directing Attorney of California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc.’s San Luis Obispo office, will speak about CRLA and its local services, followed by an overview of state and federal fair housing law, including the rights and responsibilities of tenants and housing providers.  He will discuss reasonable accommodations in housing, which is a common area of confusion for both landlords and tenants.

 

OUR SPEAKER:
 
Patrick Saldaña is the Directing Attorney of California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc.’s San Luis Obispo office and was previously the Directing Attorney in CRLA’s El Centro office. He has been in the San Luis Obispo office since May 2016, and was in CRLA’s El Centro office from January 2013 through May 2016.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Arizona and graduated from the Penn State Dickinson School of Law.  He has been licensed to practice law in California since December 2012 and in the Quechan Tribal Court since November 2014.  He handles housing, education, and labor cases, and is the co-chair of CRLA’s statewide Housing Task Force.

Join Women Lawyers for their Annual Ethics update organized each year in December by Judge Rita Federman.

Judge Federman organized the panel this year.  Due to her schedule in Paso Robles, however, she was unable to host the panel.  WLA is grateful for Judge Federman's continued support of WLA.  Thank you and we will miss you this year.

 

Attorney ethical standards have more or less remained the same for decades, but the ever changing ways in which attorneys interact with their clients continues to create new ethical challenges.  Join us for a lively discussion of recent state and federal cases in which the outcome was affected by an ethical issue or dilemma.

Speaker: Julie Casey
Julie Casey joined the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court as a research attorney in February 2016. She began her legal career as an associate with Andre, Morris & Buttery in 2004, before moving to the Santa Maria courthouse in 2009, where she worked as a research attorney for seven years. While working in Santa Maria, she also taught Legal Research and Writing and Ethics, from 2012 to 2014, for the paralegal program at Allan Hancock College.  She previously served on the WLA’s board for several years and was president in 2009.

Speaker: Amber Simmons
Amber Simmons is an associate with Andre, Morris & Buttery, whose practice focuses on litigation and the needs of the firm’s agricultural and business clients.  Prior to coming to Andre, Morris & Buttery in 2013, Amber worked in politics at both the state and federal levels of government.  Amber was born and raised in Santa Maria and is now the fourth (4th) generation of her family to live in Nipomo.  She is very involved in both the San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria communities, and will join the WLA Board of Directors as the Membership Chair in January 2017.

Speaker: Kara Stein-Conaway
Kara Stein-Conaway is an attorney who has been practicing exclusively criminal defense since 2008. She is fluent in Spanish and represents both English and Spanish-speaking clients. She works closely with attorneys who practice family law, immigration law, and professional licensing law and tailors her representation by taking into account each client’s unique personal life circumstances.  Before joining the San Luis Obispo firm of Stein, Casciola & Galambos, LLP in 2013, she worked at the LA County Public Defender’s Office from 2008 through 2013, where she completed 23 jury trials. When she is not in the courtroom, Ms. Stein-Conaway serves on the Board for the WLA, and enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason Conaway, and chasing around her two sons, Jackson & Cameron.

Michael Powell, the San Luis Obispo Superior Court Executive Officer, will speak about the policy for judicial assignments, the status of the court's budget, the implementation of e-filing, and answer your questions about how the court is running.

MICHAEL POWELL

Michael Powell is originally from San Francisco.  He received his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from U.C. Davis and his Master's degree in Social Work from Smith College in Northmapton, MA.  He was a psychotherapist in New Mexico before moving back to California in 1999.  At that time, he began work a mediator/ evaluator in child custory cases for the Superior Court.  In 2014, Michael became the Director of Strategic Planning and then moved to the Assistance Court Executive position in 2015.  He has been the Court Executive Officer since February of 2016.  Michael also serves on the Judicial Council Advisory Committee on Access and Fairness.

September MCLE: Alzheimer’s Disease
Understanding the health and legal issues affecting women

OUR SPEAKERS:
Sonya Laputz

Sonya Laputz is the Program & Development Director for the SLO Alzheimer's Association. Sonya educates families care giving for someone with dementia in our county and also leads the fundraising for the area. Her background is in dietetics where she served the senior population in a hospital setting for 10 years and also the senior nutrition program in Watts, Ca. Currently she has been with the Alzheimer's Association for 3 years and believes passionately in the cause and supporting our community. 

Stephanie Barclay

Stephanie Barclay received her JD from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1996.  Stephanie worked at several large bay area law firms and at the California Attorney General's Office before coming home to SLO.  After practicing business and real estate law for 9 years at Ogden & Fricks, Stephanie accepted a position as Project Director for Senior Legal Services Project in 2012.  In 2013 she was also given the position of Executive Director of San Luis Obispo Legal Assistance Foundation (SLOLAF), the non-profit organization that runs Senior Legal Services Project.  Senior Legal Services Project provides free legal assistance, advice, referrals and community outreach to over 1,000 seniors in SLO County each year.

Women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer's and more likely to end up caring for someone with the disease.  Please come to understand the health issues associated with Alzheimer's and the related legal issues that surround this disease.

OUR SPEAKERS:
Joan Bauman & William Powell
 
Joan graduated from Cal State Northridge in 1972 and the University of La Verne in 1977 with a JD degree and passed the California State Bar exam in December 1977. Her law practice has been solely devoted to family law and family law mediation, primarily as a sole practitioner, with interim employment from 1987 to 1993 at the law firm of Levinson, Miller, Jacobs & Phillips in Los Angeles, California, and with Phillips & Bauman in 1994 and 1995 in Los Angeles, California. Joan has been a Certified Family Law Specialist since 1990. Joan is currently serving as Treasurer of WLA and has been a member since 2003. She is also President of the Board of Trustees of Congregation Beth David.  


William has been in private practice since 1973, graduating from Southwestern University, College of Law in 1972 and licensed to practice law in December of that year.  He became a Certified Family Law Specialist in 1993.  Much of his practice was devoted to family law litigation in the Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo Courts.  Currently, as President and a Founding Member of the San Luis Obispo Collaborative Practice Group, he has focused exclusively on mediation and collaborative solutions to divorcing couples in San Luis Obispo County.
