Our Speaker: Mitchel L. Winick

Mitchel L. Winick currently serves as President and Dean of Monterey College of Law and San Luis Obispo College of Law. Dean Winick has always believed that there are many interesting things that can be done with a law degree . . . and only one of them is practicing law.

During his more than thirty-year professional career, Dean Winick's experience has been a mix of legal education, law, and business. In addition to serving as a law school dean and professor, he has served as a Assistant Attorney General of Texas, the vice president of a publicly-traded company, senior partner of a management consulting firm, and co-founder of a venture capital firm.

Dean Winick is the co-editor and co-author of three books on professionalism and law office management and is the co-host of a weekly radio program called Wagner & Winick On the Law, a law talk-radio show broadcast from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara on the radio stations KSCO AM 1080, KVEC AM 920, and KSMX AM 1240.

Dean Winick is known as an innovator in legal education. Under his tenure, the state-accredited Monterey College of Law has become known as a school of “firsts” – 1st U.S. law school to adopt the use of iPads for legal instruction, 1st U.S. law school to build a LEED Platinum “green building”, and 1st California Accredited Law School to also offer a two-year Master of Legal Studies degree and a post-graduate LL.M. degree.

Dean Winick is a 1978 graduate of the University of Houston Law Center (J.D.) and a 1976 graduate of the University of the Pacific.
