Women Lawyers Association:
Annual Ethics Update

Join Women Lawyers for their Annual Ethics update organized each year in December by Judge Rita Federman.

Judge Federman organized the panel this year.  Due to her schedule in Paso Robles, however, she was unable to host the panel.  WLA is grateful for Judge Federman's continued support of WLA.  Thank you and we will miss you this year.

Attorney ethical standards have more or less remained the same for decades, but the ever changing ways in which attorneys interact with their clients continues to create new ethical challenges.  Join us for a lively discussion of recent state and federal cases in which the outcome was affected by an ethical issue or dilemma.

Our Panelists:

Speaker: Julie Casey
Julie Casey joined the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court as a research attorney in February 2016. She began her legal career as an associate with Andre, Morris & Buttery in 2004, before moving to the Santa Maria courthouse in 2009, where she worked as a research attorney for seven years. While working in Santa Maria, she also taught Legal Research and Writing and Ethics, from 2012 to 2014, for the paralegal program at Allan Hancock College.  She previously served on the WLA’s board for several years and was president in 2009.

Speaker: Amber Simmons
Amber Simmons is an associate with Andre, Morris & Buttery, whose practice focuses on litigation and the needs of the firm’s agricultural and business clients.  Prior to coming to Andre, Morris & Buttery in 2013, Amber worked in politics at both the state and federal levels of government.  Amber was born and raised in Santa Maria and is now the fourth (4th) generation of her family to live in Nipomo.  She is very involved in both the San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria communities, and will join the WLA Board of Directors as the Membership Chair in January 2017.

Speaker: Kara Stein-Conaway
Kara Stein-Conaway is an attorney who has been practicing exclusively criminal defense since 2008. She is fluent in Spanish and represents both English and Spanish-speaking clients. She works closely with attorneys who practice family law, immigration law, and professional licensing law and tailors her representation by taking into account each client’s unique personal life circumstances.  Before joining the San Luis Obispo firm of Stein, Casciola & Galambos, LLP in 2013, she worked at the LA County Public Defender’s Office from 2008 through 2013, where she completed 23 jury trials. When she is not in the courtroom, Ms. Stein-Conaway serves on the Board for the WLA, and enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason Conaway, and chasing around her two sons, Jackson & Cameron.
