2016 Outstanding Woman Lawyer Award

Join us in congratulating WLA’s 2016 Outstanding Women Lawyer, Jan Marx.  Jan has lived and worked in San Luis Obispo since 1988.  In 1998 she ran for City Council, and has been a public servant ever since, first as Council member, and then as Mayor.  In 2016, she was elected President of the County-wide San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) and the San Luis Obispo Regional Transportation Agency (SLORTA). She also serves on the Air Pollution Control District (APCD). She is the chief negotiator with the Airport Land Use Commission to resolve issues of housing in the annexation areas. She owned her own business for 17 years and practiced estate planning, real property and local government law. She also taught Business Law at Cal Poly.

Jan was a president of WLA in its formative years, and remained active until her City schedule precluded it. She was the California Women Lawyers Affiliate representative from WLA for many years. As a private practitioner, she represented women in a number of employment discrimination cases.  In the 1990’s She was instrumental in forming the Women’s Shelter Restraining Order clinic and she has provided increased opportunities for women to advance in City government.

Before she moved to SLO, Jan was already supporting the advancement of women:  from early conscious-raising days in New York City, to changing the rules at Stanford University to allow women to live off-campus (as did men), to founding a women’s student bar association at Santa Clara University. In the mid 1980's, she worked on the US Supreme Court case (Johnson v. Transportation Agency) that successfully defended affirmative action for women.

Jan has earned degrees from University of Santa Clara Law School (J.D.); Stanford University (B.A.), and Columbia University (M.A.).

On Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the WLA’s March MCLE meeting, Jan was presented with the Outstanding Women Lawyer award.  She was nominated by former Outstanding Women Lawyer award winner, Angie King.  Photos from the March 1, 2017 March meeting are below.
