The Crime Behind Closed Doors: Intimate Partner Violence in 2019
 

June MCLE: Intimate partner violence affects people from all walks of life, and has lasting impacts on society as a whole. This program will address the legal and social issues around intimate partner violence, including the challenges faced by the district attorney's office in prosecuting domestic violence cases, and case examples. The panel will also discuss legal and practical challenges survivors face, and address the significant impact intimate partner violence has on public health, as well as the importance of awareness, prevention education, and advocacy. 

The Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo County is a California State Bar approved MCLE provider.  This program qualifies for one (1.0) hour MCLE credit.

OUR SPEAKERS:

Nikhil Dandekar | Deputy District Attorney

Nikhil "Nik" Dandekar is a Deputy District Attorney with the San Luis Obispo District Attorney's Office. He is currently in the domestic violence assignment where he has worked prosecuting domestic violence cases for the past three years. Prior to joining the San Luis Obispo District Attorney's Office in October 2014, he worked as a volunteer attorney for the Santa Barbara District Attorney's Office. Mr. Dandekar attended the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign Illinois and was admitted to practice in California in 2013.

Jane Pomeroy | Associate Director RISE

A San Luis Obispo native, Jane Pomeroy has lived and worked in this community for over 20 years.  An advocate, activist, and community organizer, Jane has cultivated a passion for violence prevention as a tool for building healthy, thriving communities.  She received her master's degree in Social Welfare at UC Berkeley, and now works as the Associate Director at RISE where she partners with national, state-wide, and local organizations to ensure services to survivors of gender based violence are relevant, innovative, and of the highest quality. 


Christina Kaviani | Associate Director Stand Strong

Christina Kaviani is the Associate Director of Stand Strong, a non-profit that supports survivors of domestic violence and works to end all forms of gender-based violence in San Luis Obispo.  Since 2007, she has dedicated her career to creating a community where abuse and violence are not tolerated. Recently, Christina finished her PhD in Human Development with a focus on the impact of smartphones on the sexual behaviors of Generation Z college males.  Christina is a proud mother of two boys, Reza and Zia, who help her understand the importance of education, justice and most of all, love.
