OUR SPEAKER:

Dr. Nancy Arrington

Dr. Nancy Arrington is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Cal Poly, SLO. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Emory University, a MIP from the University of Georgia, and a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Arrington's research addresses how political institutions shape prospects for the inclusion and incorporation of women and minority officials, both in the United States and cross-nationally. In her dissertation project, she explains how institutional selection mechanisms condition three steps required for gender diversification on peak courts. Specifically, selection institutions shape the citizenry’s ability to (1) make inferences about whether or not gender bias occurs in the selection process, (2) identify the people or person responsible for perceived bias, and (3) hold those responsible for bias accountable.

OUR SPEAKER:

June McIvor

June McIvor

June McIvor was first introduced to Title IX in junior high school. She had been dismayed to discover there was no girls’ soccer team at her high school; her P.E. teacher set her on a 4-year journey that would result in June co-captaining the first ever varsity girls’ soccer team at New Canaan High School in Connecticut.

She received her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and, maybe influenced by her experience with law in high school, her law degree from the University of Virginia. June began her legal career as an associate at the Los Angeles law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where she specialized in real estate issues, leveraged buyouts, and corporate acquisitions.

Taking what was supposed to be a 2-year leave of absence from the firm, June joined the organizing committee for World Cup USA 1994, hailed as the most successful World Cup ever, as Vice President of Legal Affairs. She never did go back to the law firm. In her subsequent role as General Counsel of Major League Soccer (MLS), June was a member of the founding team that launched the premier professional men’s soccer league in the U.S. The league’s groundbreaking single entity structure required June’s legal oversight of, and counsel to, the league and all ten teams.

June next served as Chief Operating Officer for the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Organizing Committee – a dream come true. She was intimately involved with every aspect of the tournament, from filling the stadiums for the largest women’s sporting event in history to making “Women’s World Cup” a household phrase. Her particular focus was on business and legal operations: negotiating major corporate and sponsorship partnerships for the Committee, shaping marketing and ticketing strategy, negotiating stadium leases, and managing the seven venues across the country which staged Women’s World Cup games in 1999. She also oversaw the championship venue in 2003.

After moving to San Luis Obispo in 2003, she was a partner in the law firm of Sinsheimer Juhnke McIvor & Stroh; she is now President & CEO of Tolosa winery. June lives in San Luis Obispo with her husband, Duane Hall, and their daughter, Kaylie.

June 2022 Zoom MCLE: Wine Law, from Prohibition to Today with Courtney Taylor

Women Lawyers Association
Presents

June MCLE with Courtney Taylor: Wine Law, from Prohibition to Today

Courtney will present a brief overview of the history of alcohol regulations in the United States, followed by a presentation outlining how our failed experiment with alcohol prohibition shaped the complicated web of laws and regulations that still govern the wine industry today and the challenges wineries face to comply with these outdated systems. Topics will include the various state regulatory frameworks that regulate wine production, distribution, and sales, as well as trade practice and tied house laws that continue to restrict basic contracting, marketing, and sales activities that are unregulated in almost any other industry.

The Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo County is a California State Bar approved MCLE provider. This program qualifies for one (1.0) hour of MCLE participatory credit. Please Join Us (remotely)!

Please join the Women Lawyers Association for our June event

OUR SPEAKER:

Courtney Taylor

Courtney serves as counsel to a diverse range of alcoholic beverage industry members. Her practice focuses exclusively on all aspects of alcohol beverage law and regulation for wineries, breweries, distilled spirits plants, importers, wholesalers and retailers. Areas of expertise include state and federal alcoholic beverage licensing, tied house and trade practice laws, and federal labeling regulations and approvals. Courtney specializes in intellectual property laws specific to wine brands and has prosecuted hundreds of applications for her winery clients. Courtney also assists her clients with contracts and agreements related to their operation in the alcohol beverage industry, including alternating proprietor agreements, custom crush
agreements, distribution agreements, winemaker agreements, and trademark license agreements.

Courtney has practiced in the alcohol beverage field for almost a decade. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from UC Davis in 2006, with degrees in Communication and Spanish. Courtney worked for Accenture shortly after graduation, and left that career to return to UC Davis King Hall for law school in 2010. November 2021 Zoom MCLE: Common Estate Planning Disasters and How to Avoid Them

Women Lawyers Association
Presents

Common Estate Planning Disasters and How to Avoid Them

November MCLE: Well, maybe “disasters” is too strong a word. “Mistakes” or “severe oversights” that result in a decedent’s testamentary wishes being thwarted may be more accurate. However, for the individuals involved in stressful and expensive estate litigation cases after the death of a loved one, “disaster” oftentimes feels like the more suitable word. This CLE will discuss avoiding certain common mistakes (don't worry, I won't cover esoteric tax issues) that seem like basic common sense, but all too often cause litigation. For attorneys who practice in the estate planning field, care and diligence in the client interview process can minimize the chance of problems arising in these areas and maximize the chance of a client’s testamentary wishes being attained.
