June MCLE: Scott Wall and David Merlo will provide a brief overview of highlights of the 2017 Tax Act signed into law on December 22, 2018.  The Act has been called the most significant overhaul of the US tax code since 1986.  It generally applies to taxable years beginning on and after January 1, 2018, and the changes will have a profound impact on individuals, businesses, trusts, and estates in a variety of ways.

David Merlo

Scott Wall is a Partner at Andre, Morris & Buttery.  Scott is the Chairman of the Estate Planning, Trusts and Probate Practice Group and is a member of the Business and Real Estate Transactions Practice Group. He is certified by the State Bar of California as a specialist in estate planning, trust, and probate law. Before starting his law practice, he was a Certified Public Accountant.

Scott received his B.A. degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his J.D. degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1986.

Scott concentrates his practice in estate planning and administration and business and real estate transactions. Because of his background as a CPA, Scott brings both income and estate tax expertise to his practice. He has handled a broad range of estate, business, and real estate matters, from the ordinary to the extremely complex. He is frequently consulted by other attorneys and CPAs to assist in structuring complicated estate planning, business, and real estate transactions and in resolving complex estate administration matters.

 

David is currently Tax Principal with Glenn Burdette.  He has been a Principal since 2008.  Since joining the Glenn Burdette team in 2003 he has specialized in advising and servicing corporate, partnership and limited liability entities and planning with the related business owners.  David is known for providing technically sound advice in the areas of taxation and business consulting.  He has extensive experience with industries including professional service companies, agriculture, and hospitality.  David has also advised on several business mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to joining the Glenn Burdette team, David resided in San Diego where he graduated from the University of San Diego and practiced accounting with the national firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.  David is a native to the Central Coast where his family has resided for over the last 50 years.  While growing up on the Central Coast David learned a lot about the business community and the dedication and hard work it takes to be successful while working in the family business.

David is most proud of his family.  He and his wife Katie can be found enjoying several sporting events, whether participating or watching, with their 3 children.  David also enjoys giving back to the community and has been an active member of the Pacific Central Coast Health Center and chair of the board (a Dignity Health Member), Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum and Central Coast Cal CPA society.
