October 2025 MCLE: WLA invites you to a special presentation from retired trial attorney Melvin de la Motte.  Attorney de la Motte will discuss three key tools necessary for effective courtroom presentation.  These tools can be adapted to every courtroom situation; from jury and bench trials, to motion practice, and even to arguing cases on appeal. Preparation begins before you put a foot inside the courtroom. The organization of the delivery is essential. Finally, the need to master the art of true communication, not just making speeches. These tools are easy to learn and should become the foundation for every successful trial lawyer.

The Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo is a California State Bar approved MCLE provider. This program qualifies for one (1.0) hour of MCLE participatory credit.

This event can be attended either in person or via Zoom

OUR SPEAKER:

Melvin A. de la Motte

Melvin de la Motte practiced primarily as a criminal defense lawyer in San Luis Obispo County for 30 years and earned a reputation as a fierce and zealous advocate in the courtroom, to the chagrin of opposing counsel.  Mel tried over 125 civil and criminal jury trials during his career, including 10 murder cases.  His tenacious courtroom persuasion earned him the nickname "Darth Vader" with the SLO County's district attorney's office.  He is now happily retired and spends his time traveling, golfing, watching his grandchildren play sports, studying the stock market/global economics, and of course...fishing.
