June 2025 MCLE: In light of California’s recently enacted Senate Bill 553, employers face important new obligations to address, record, and prevent workplace violence.  Local attorneys Michaela Cotton and Aislinn Roberts will provide an overview of the law’s requirements and practical guidance for compliance.  In addition, Ms. Cotton and Ms. Roberts will provide information regarding workplace violence restraining orders, including when one may be appropriate and the general process to obtain one.

The Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo is a California State Bar approved MCLE provider. This program qualifies for one (1.0) hour of MCLE - participatory credit.

OUR SPEAKERS:

Aislinn Roberts

Aislinn Kiyomi Roberts is an Associate Attorney in Lozano Smith’s San Luis Obispo office and co-chair of the firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. Her legal practice is focused on the labor and employment, investigations, and governance aspects of public agency law.

Ms. Roberts assists clients on various labor and employment issues, including discipline, layoffs, discrimination complaints, disability accommodations, leaves, and workplace violence.  Her labor and employment practice also includes grievance processing, grievance mediation and arbitration, contract interpretation, and appeals.  She also advises clients on student-related issues such as records, discipline, searches, and constitutional issues.

Ms. Roberts advises public agencies through the investigation process and serves as a third-party investigator for issues involving sexual harassment, Uniform Complaint Procedures, Title IX, retaliation, discrimination, and other complaints that may arise in the education setting.

Ms. Roberts earned her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and her B.A. in Political Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Michaela Cotton

Michaela Cotton is a Principal with the law firm Andre, Morris & Buttery, and member of the firm’s Employment Law and Civil Litigation practice groups. Her legal practice is focused on civil litigation, employment counseling and workplace investigations. Ms. Cotton assists local companies in day-to-day advisement on labor and employment issues, and has represented clients in a variety of matters, including employment discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, wage and hour class action lawsuits, and real property and business disputes.

Ms. Cotton also acts as a third-party investigator of complaints of sexual harassment, gender, race, disability or other forms of discrimination and is an Association of Workplace Investigators (“AWI”) Certificate Holder.

Ms. Cotton earned her Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School and her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
