March MCLE: Join local attorney Susan Lustig as she discusses recent changes to California law and State Bar requirements which have made attorney civility an express component of professional duty. Civility is no longer aspirational; it is grounded in Business and Professions Code section 6068 and reinforced by the Rules of Professional Conduct and related sanction statutes.

This program examines the legal framework governing attorney civility, including statutory duties, ethical obligations, and potential disciplinary consequences. Participants will analyze common practice scenarios — including written communications, discovery disputes, depositions, and courtroom conduct — to identify where routine litigation behavior may implicate ethical or sanction exposure.

The focus is practical compliance: how to maintain strong advocacy while satisfying enforceable civility requirements and minimizing professional risk in everyday practice.

The Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo is a California State Bar approved MCLE provider. This program qualifies for one (1.0) hour of Civility MCLE credit.

This event can be attended either in person or via Zoom

OUR SPEAKER:

Susan Lustig

Susan Lustig is a California attorney with more than 28 years of legal experience and several years of focused practice in family law. She represents individuals and families throughout San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara Counties, offering steady guidance, practical advice, and a grounded approach to resolving family law matters.

Clients value Susan’s calm professionalism, straightforward communication, and ability to bring clarity to complicated or emotional situations. She works closely with each client to understand their goals, explain their options clearly, and help them make informed decisions at each stage of the process. Her focus is on achieving fair, workable resolutions that support clients as they move forward.

Before dedicating her practice to family law in 2021, Susan spent many years designing and leading international justice reform programs for the Attorney General Alliance’s Alliance Partnership. She trained prosecutors, judges, and forensic experts in oral advocacy throughout Mexico and Africa, and remains one of the few American attorneys certified by the Mexican government to teach under its reformed criminal justice system. Her background in advocacy and education informs her clear, structured approach to legal analysis and client communication.

Susan holds an LL.M. in Trial Litigation (magna cum laude), a Diploma in Criminal Law from the University of Salamanca in Spain, and earned her J.D. as valedictorian of the Santa Barbara College of Law. She is fluent in Spanish and maintains a strong commitment to service in her local community. She volunteers as a judge and scorer for the San Luis Obispo County and Cal Poly Mock Trial programs and serves as a State Bar Fee Dispute Arbitrator. Her previous leadership roles include service with the Hispanic Medical Legal Association and the GenSpan Foundation.

Whether navigating divorce, parenting issues, or other legal needs that arise as families change, Susan provides clear guidance, steady support, and practical solutions tailored to the needs of each client.
